Two ways to see Everest from Kathmandu

Everest helicopter tour or mountain flight by plane

The helicopter lands in the Khumbu. The sightseeing plane flies along the Himalaya and back without touching down.

The short answer

Book a helicopter if you want to land in the Everest region, at Kala Patthar, Base Camp or Hotel Everest View; book the mountain flight by plane if seeing Everest from the air is enough and you want to stay in your seat the whole time. The plane does not land, so there is no time on the ground at altitude and no breakfast stop. On the plane your seat decides what you see: travellers complain about wings and propellers in their photos, and one plane listing here guarantees a window seat.

Both leave from Kathmandu and both depend on the weather. Everything else is different: the aircraft, the time you spend at altitude and what you take home in your photos.

Choose your way of seeing Everest

Take the helicopter if…

  • you want to stand in the Khumbu, at Kala Patthar or below Hotel Everest View
  • breakfast at Hotel Everest View is part of the plan; several itineraries include the hotel stop
  • you can keep to the weight limit per passenger that each helicopter listing sets
  • you accept fees on the day, such as national park fees, on top of the online price

Take the plane if…

  • seeing Everest from the air is enough and you do not need to land
  • you would rather not stand at more than 5,000 m, even for a short stop
  • you want hotel pickup; the plane listings here name pickup or transfers
  • you pick the flight by seat: one listing guarantees a window seat

Landing or no landing

The difference that matters most: a helicopter sets down, the sightseeing plane does not. Helicopter itineraries name stops such as Lukla, Pheriche, Syangboche below Hotel Everest View and, on some flights, Kala Patthar at more than 5,500 m. The plane flies from Kathmandu along the Himalaya and back. The landing points page explains what each stop on an itinerary means.

How long each trip takes

One plane listing describes its flight as about an hour from Kathmandu. A helicopter tour adds the stops on the ground and, on most itineraries, Lukla on the way. The fact sheet on this page shows the length of the whole trip for each flight as the operator gives it.

Where you sit on the plane

On the plane the seat decides the view, and this is where the criticism concentrates. In the reviews of the plane flights we read, travellers describe seats by the propeller with no clear shot of the range, or a wing in most of their photos from the back of the plane. One of them wrote that they would only fly again with a seat away from the wing guaranteed. One plane listing here guarantees a window seat; on the others, ask before you book how seats are given out. The helicopter listings do not say how seats are given out either.

Today's starting prices: $100–$190 for the mountain flights by plane, $900–$1,980 per person for a seat in a shared helicopter. The plane listings do not state their price basis, so check the option on the booking page before you compare.

Both wait for the weather

Plane and helicopter both depend on the weather over the mountains. Departures can move by hours or to another day, so keep a spare day in Kathmandu. The helicopter flights here can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before departure; for the plane flights, read the cancellation terms on the booking page. More on weather and cancellations.

What travellers say about the plane seats

Criticism of the mountain flights is mostly about the seat, not the mountains. On the flight with a guaranteed window seat, travellers write about the seats in a different tone.

Critical review (1 to 3 stars)
“… I was at the back of the plane on the right hand side and a plane wing was in most of my shots. … I would only do this trip if I was guaranteed a seat without a wing.”
Tripadvisor reviewer · October 2025 One-hour Everest flight with hotel pickup
“Driver dropped us off at the airport and did not give us instructions how to checkin for flight. Seats on flight were by the propeller with no clear shot of the mountain range. … As soon as we saw Everest, the plane quickly turned around for the airport.”
W_K · November 2023 Everest mountain flight with hotel pickup
“Excellent experience from hotel pick up to drop off. Our tour guide selected the best seats for us and we did not have to wait in the queue at the airport. Strongly recommend this company to everyone”

FAQ

Is the Everest mountain flight worth it compared with a helicopter?

It depends on what you want to take home. The plane shows you Everest from the window and lands back in Kathmandu. The helicopter lands in the Khumbu, on some flights at Kala Patthar. The flights on this page show today's starting prices side by side.

Do I get a window seat on the Everest mountain flight?

One plane listing on this site guarantees a window seat. On the others the listings do not say, and travellers have complained about seats by the wing or the propeller. Ask before you book.

Does the mountain flight land anywhere?

No. The sightseeing plane flies from Kathmandu along the Himalaya and back without landing.

Which is more affected by the weather, plane or helicopter?

Both depend on the weather over the mountains, and both can be delayed or moved. Keep a spare day in Kathmandu whichever you book.
